Fastpitch softball uses 60-foot bases at every youth level and in high school. Only the pitching distance grows: 35 feet at 10U, 40 at 12U, and 43 feet from 14U up, including high school. Fences run 175 to 225 feet at 10U and 200 to 225 feet from 12U through 18U in USA Softball; Little League uses 200 feet.
The distances
| Level | Bases | Pitching distance | Fence |
|---|---|---|---|
| USA Softball 10U | 60 ft | 35 ft | 175–225 ft |
| USA Softball 12U | 60 ft | 40 ft | 200–225 ft |
| USA Softball girls 14U, 16U and 18U | 60 ft | 43 ft | 200–225 ft |
| High school (NFHS) | 60 ft | 43 ft | |
| Little League Minors | 60 ft | 35 ft | 200 ft |
| Little League Majors | 60 ft | 40 ft | 200 ft |
| Little League Junior and Senior | 60 ft | 43 ft | 200 ft |
| Adult women’s fastpitch | 60 ft | 43 ft | 200–250 ft |
The fences are the shortest and longest USA Softball allows for its championships; local fields vary. Little League’s 200 feet is for every softball division.
8U isn’t in USA Softball’s national table: the local association sets it. Little League Tee Ball softball can also play on a 50-foot diamond.
Only the mound moves
Unlike baseball, where a young player goes from 60-foot bases to 90, a softball player plays on 60-foot bases from her first kid-pitch game through high school. The pitching distance is what changes, stepping back to 43 feet at about 14. The pitching distance page has more on that jump.
The circle
The pitcher’s circle has an 8-foot radius around the pitcher’s plate (16 feet across), at every level. It’s the line that starts the look-back rule.
Boys’ and men’s fastpitch
Boys’ fastpitch from 14U and men’s fastpitch pitch from 46 feet. Bases stay at 60 feet, and men’s fields are deeper: 225 to 275 feet.
Slowpitch is different
Slowpitch uses longer bases and pitching distances: 70-foot bases and 50 feet for adults. See slowpitch vs fastpitch.
Explained in our own words, not an official ruling: in a competition, the committee, league or umpire decides, and local rules apply.
