Keeping it simple at the game
Make a tick mark in the right box after each plate appearance and add them up after the game. Two things trip up new scorekeepers:
- At-bats aren’t plate appearances. Walks, hit by pitch, sacrifice bunts and flies, and catcher obstruction aren’t at-bats, so count them in PA and their own column, but not in AB.
- Reaching on an error isn’t a hit. It’s an at-bat with no hit.
For pitching, write innings the scorebook way: 4.1 is 4 innings and 1 out. Earned runs leave out runs that scored because of an error or passed ball.
After the game
Add the season’s totals into the batting average calculator for AVG, OBP, SLG and OPS, and into the ERA calculator, which works on 7-inning games.
