2027 High School Softball Rule Changes (NFHS), Explained

Four NFHS changes take effect for the 2027 high school season. Courtesy runners can run for the pitcher and catcher before they've faced a batter. Coaches can send one-way electronic signals to the pitcher. Any fair ball touched by a fielder is now a deflected ball. And states set umpire uniform standards.

The NFHS published its 2027 softball rule changes in September 2026. They apply to the spring 2027 high school season.

Courtesy runners (8-10-2)

A courtesy runner may run for the pitcher or catcher. The change removes the requirement that the starting pitcher and catcher face the first batter on defense before a courtesy runner can be used for them. A team whose pitcher or catcher reaches base in the top of the first can now use one right away.

Electronic communication to the pitcher (1-9-6 exception)

Coaches could already send one-way electronic signals to the catcher. From 2027 they may send them to the pitcher as well. It’s one-way: from the dugout to the player, not back.

The deflected ball (2-46-3a)

Once a fair batted ball touches any fielder, including the pitcher, it’s treated as a deflected ball.

Umpire uniforms (10-4-2)

State associations may set their own standards for umpire uniforms.

What isn’t changing

The 2026 renumbering stays: DP/FLEX is rule 3-2-6, re-entry 3-2-5, and the look-back rule 8-8. The illegal pitch penalty, a ball with no advance for runners, is unchanged.

Explained in our own words, not an official ruling: in a competition, the committee, league or umpire decides, and local rules apply.
