If the catcher doesn't catch strike three cleanly, the batter may run to first, unless first base is occupied with fewer than two outs. Then she's out anyway. High school fastpitch and Little League's Major Division both use the rule.

The rule

Strike three is only an automatic out if the catcher catches it cleanly, before it touches the ground. If she drops it or it bounces first, the batter may run to first, and the defense has to tag her or throw to first to get the out.

The exception: with a runner on first and fewer than two outs, the batter is out on strike three whether it’s caught or not. With two outs, or with first base empty, she can run.

First base Outs Can she run?
Empty 0, 1 or 2 Yes
Occupied 0 or 1 No, she’s out
Occupied 2 Yes

In the 2026 NFHS book this is rule 7-4-7, for fastpitch. Slow pitch is different: any third strike that isn’t caught is an out and a dead ball.

Why the exception

Without it, a catcher could drop strike three on purpose with a runner on first and force a double play. The exception removes the trick.

What it means for the scorebook

The pitcher still gets credit for a strikeout even if the batter reaches first. That’s how a pitcher can strike out four in an inning.

The look-back rule still applies

If she reaches first on a dropped third strike and the pitcher then has the ball in the circle, the look-back rule applies to her like any other runner.

Youth softball

Little League uses the dropped third strike in the Major Division of softball. In other divisions, travel ball and other youth leagues, the league’s rulebook decides, so ask before the season.

Explained in our own words, not an official ruling: in a competition, the committee, league or umpire decides, and local rules apply.
